Secrets of a Successful Open House

If you have decided to have an open house party, then it’s time to let the little Martha Stewart in you run loose.

When you have an open house, you have to makes sure that your home is at its best. Just like any other party, you have to ensure that your home looks warm, cozy, inviting and simply … beautiful. The difference with a regular party and an open house is the fact that you have to prep up ALL the rooms. Potential buyers will not just stay in the living room; they will want to see the side of your house you don’t usually show to guests.

A few days before your party you must clean the house thoroughly. Forget sweeping and vacuuming, we are talking about MAJOR SPRING CLEANING here. Stains, dust bunnies and spills must be removed; loose hinges and screws must be tightened, all light bulbs must be replaced; windows washed, dishes stacked properly … THE WORKS. After this has been done, go through the house as if you were a buyer.

Prior to the party, buy a nice notebook (which will be your guest book) and prepare little business cards to be given away. If you wish to prepare a flyer itemizing the key points of the house, you may do so as well. Finally, spruce up your home with flowers, scented candles, soaps, soft pillows and potpourri. These little accessories give the place warmth and make it more inviting.

Though it may seem a tad unkind, during open house events, it’s better if you let your pets and children stay with your parents or with a neighbor. They may be adorable (and I’m sure they are) but frisky Rover may frighten some guests and your toddler could prove to be a distraction.
